Sixth Street Survey Results and Public Engagement Report
Sixth Street Survey Results and Public Engagement Report
The City of Austin sought community input on three design alternatives for Sixth Street in 2025. The feedback period is now closed and the City has released its preferred alternative. For additional context and information, visit the virtual open house page.
Overview
Thank you to everyone who participated in the community conversation about mobility and safety improvements along East Sixth Street, between Congress Avenue and I-35 as part of the Sixth Street Mobility and Revitalization Project.
The engagement process included:
- A virtual open house and survey from September 19 to October 19, 2025.
- Two stakeholder meetings (June 2 and September 17, 2025) made up of business and property owners, the Downtown Austin Alliance, and the Sixth Street Public Improvement District, each attended by approximately 20-30 invited attendees.
As part of this process, the City evaluated three potential design options for the corridor. Feedback gathered through the public engagement process, along with technical analysis, informed the City’s selection of a recommended design.
Stakeholder Meeting 1: June 2, 2025
A first stakeholder meeting was held on June 2, 2025 at Parkside, located at 301 East Sixth St. The meeting was by invitation only and aimed at gathering input from immediate stakeholders directly affected by the project—such as business owners, property owners, and organizations with specific interests in Sixth Street and the surrounding downtown area. Invitations were emailed to 68 individuals, with an option to submit questions in advance, and just over 30 attendees participated in the session.
Staff from Austin Transportation and Public Works and Austin Police were present at the meeting. The event included a PowerPoint presentation followed by a Q&A. The presentation was divided into two parts: Part 1 provided an overview of the Sixth Street Safety Pilot, and Part 2 introduced the Sixth Street Preliminary Engineering Study including its scope, timeline, relationship to the ACT Plan, and next steps. Comments were collected verbally during the discussion and through written comment cards.
Stakeholder Meeting 2: September 17, 2025
A second stakeholder meeting was held on September 17, 2025. The event was held at the same location as the first stakeholder meeting. The attendee list was similar to the first meeting with staff representing the same departments.
The event included a PowerPoint presentation and a Q&A session. Staff was able to use feedback from the first meeting to provide printed versions of the three design schematics (Alternative 1, Alternative 2, and Alternative 3). Attendees were invited to leave written feedback directly on the printed materials. Comments were collected verbally, through written comment cards, and via sticky notes placed on the design schematics.
