Living Streets Activity Zone Pilot

Coventry Lane

The Living Streets Program will test a new type of activation called an “Activity Zone.” The goal of the Activity Zone is to raise the level of awareness for users to look out for play and other activities in the street in a specific area. However, the road is not closed to through traffic and those using the Activity Zone need to be on the lookout for vehicles and be able to respond to vehicles entering the zone.

Equipment for the pilot is expected to be installed on Coventry Lane starting in May 2026, if the 60% approval threshold in maintained. It will replace the existing Play Street.

The Activity Zone will be created by two sharp chicanes (S-curves) that force cars to slow significantly before entering the zone.

Example of the chicane

The chicanes will be placed at approximately 5502 Coventry Lane and 5512 Coventry Lane, in a manner that does not inhibit driveways. This creates an Activity Zone approximately 300 feet long, while providing enough room at either end of the street for cars to slow down and go through the chicane. Signs will be installed at the intersections at either end of the street to inform drivers that an Activity Zone lies ahead, with the intention of slowing drivers and increasing awareness.
