Let our city be a true leader in health initiatives. Other cities that have started taxing soda saw a decrease by 6% in soda consumption and the money gained could be used for more public health initiatives.
I work for the state, so my income is modest, to say the least. Day care should not be more than my mortgage. And the daycare that is affordable, shouldn't be like stepping into a third world country, nor have a wait list months long.

Guess what? It doesn't email you when anyone comments. It does nothing. Maybe that's why the city is unresponsive on some of the issues here -- they are probably not getting any updates either...!
Land use and zoning codes only play one part in the food system, but the correct use can impact how communities produce and access food. Austin has entered a vicious cycle when it comes to the the local food system. Austin has lost over 3,00 acres of farmland due to urbanization and the privileging of auto- centric zoning which then leads to less reliable access to fresh produce in those urban areas. 18 % of the population in Austin are food insecure. Some suggestions have been made to the CodeNEXT development board by the Sustainable Food Policy Board: • that encourages density appropriate farming activities • develop food production districts where farms that produce food are preserved • require all new multi family housing developments to create a food access plan • institutionalize community garden property
These additions to the Code’s revision would help to build a more sustainable food culture, help to eliminate food deserts, and increase health disparities by increasing access to healthy, fresh, and affordable foods.
they can keep each other company , go on walks together . And maybe even with a kindergarten attached
Many wonderful organizations like Front Steps, Caritas of Austin, The Salvation Army, etc. serve the homeless so that they can spring back into self-sufficiency with dignity. They provide a multitude of important services like shelter, food, cleaning, healthcare, case management, housing, employment search, phone and mail facilities, transit passes, computer and internet access, and much more.
But there is one very basic and important need that is not getting fulfilled completely - Hygiene. These organizations hand-out hygiene items for free to the homeless but are not able to meet all the needs. These include items like razors, deodorants, tooth brushes, tooth pastes, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. The Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) alone provides hundreds of showers every single day to men and women so the need is huge!
Hygiene is very important for many reasons, like: - Reducing risks of diseases and other health issues - Making people feel clean and good about themselves - Helping them be more presentable so that they have better chances at jobs and relationships which are key for bringing them out of this vicious state of homelessness
This is such an important human need and its so unfortunate its not getting fully served. The homeless are some of the most deprived people in the society so please help them in ways that can make a real impact in the quality of their lives!
You may extend your support here: http://www.youcaring.com/a-very-important-need-of-the-homeless
I will utilize each and every dollar of your generous donation to buy hygiene items at low cost in bulk from wholesale stores and bring them to the various organizations in Austin that hand them out to the homeless.
Thank you so much for making a real difference! Please also share this within your circles. Larger the reach, better the chances of us making a significant difference!
Look around.... hardly anywhere to lock up your bike! All over Austin! There is a need to be able to lock up your own personal bike. Time for some creative people to come up with attractive user friendly bike lockup stations. (sorry, Whole Food Domain's rack is not user friendly). Bikes for local travel and then our expanding bus and train options.... great for a city that is growing leaps and bounds. Healthy, fun, economical. Thank you Austin!
