Stop discouraging people from installing more solar energy production than they currently use - Austin Energy policy changes over the last two years now cause all production over current use to be lost at the end of each year. This reset is contrary to City policy to encourage and maximize distributed energy production! It actually encourages waste - why not use it if you are just going to lose it at the end of the year?

This change particularly impacted existing customers with more production than use - some had figured the credits into their financial model for PV system payback. It also impacts people who installed extra solar panels to use with future electric car charging.

Suggested options for how to let customers use their credits: * Apply towards other parts of their Austin Utilities or other CoA bills like water and resource recovery, like it used to * Donate the credits towards low income energy assistance program * Send customers a check at the end of the year for the credit amount (automatically or upon request)

I agree with everything Jason said very eloquently. This policy is nickle-and-diming a few people who are generating extra clean energy, and there is no need to discourage it, nor is there a need to encourage waste. The "use it or lose it" policy seems greedy on AE's part and it's a disappointment. You want a forward-thinking energy utility to encourage good energy practices.

Absolutely, Jason. The policy either gives potential solar customers pause, keeps them away or encourages smaller systems or excessive energy use. Last year Austin Energy (Austin City Council) confiscated $631.00 of our "excess production". We will probably lose additional money this year. They give several reasons for that but at the end of the day they sold the power we generated and kept our money. Would have been nice if they were honest enough to tell us up front..........we would have made a different decision. We will soon have opportunity to speak to our new Council Members about this - Austin Energy reports to them through the City Manager.

Recent announcements say that Austin Energy has eliminated the yearly reset of credits! Now we need something to do with credits if they continue to build up over time.

Hello Jason, thank you for your comments. You are correct that Value of Solar credits for residential solar installations (owned or leased) now roll over and are no longer eliminated at the end of the calendar year. For more information about VoS credits, including how they’re determined and applied, check out our webpage below. Yes, they do roll over year to year but will be confiscated if they are not used by the time you close the account.
