Since April the animal intakes at the City shelter are not leveling off and the Animal Services Office can not keep up with the high number of intakes versus those animals that are being adopted or rescued by the City’s partner animal rescue groups. Compared to last year at this time the animal shelter has taken in140 more animals and have 139 less adoptions, a net increase of 279 more pets. Please share your ideas or suggestions on how the City can address this issue, short-term, and possibly long-term.

The Austin Animal Center has been running adoption specials throughout the year and has significantly increased the number of foster homes over the past few months.  Presently, there are 128 active foster homes, caring for more than 300 cats or kittens and 45 dogs or puppies. Since the beginning of the year the Animal Services Office has been offering free pet identification to all pet owners of Austin and Travis County. This program is a fairly easy solution to try to move animals through the shelter more quickly.   When a stray pet comes to the shelter and it has a microchip and I.D. tag we can move them out of the shelter much quicker than those pets without identification.  So far we have tagged more than 1,300 pets in the community. In addition, since January 2012 the City has a conducted approximately 1,200 spay/neuter surgeries on pets in the Austin and Travis County community to help address the homeless pet population. The City of Austin offers free and low-cost surgeries to many areas of the city.Additional ideas and suggestions welcomed to address the animal intakes at the City shelter.
